This year, Uvex Safety South Africa – a subsidiary of the Uvex Safety Group, a German family-owned personal protective equipment (PPE) manufacturer established in 1926 – is celebrating 25 years of being a proudly South African subsidiary.

“Our expertise is to develop and manufacture high-quality industrial safety, sport and leisure products that meet the highest standards in terms of quality and functionality,” says Christo Nel, director of sales and marketing in Middle East, Africa and India at Uvex Safety South Africa.

The company’s range comprises several product groups, including: safety eyewear, safety gloves, hearing protection, safety helmets, breathing protection, disposable protective clothing, prescription safety spectacles and individual hearing protection.

“This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the world finds itself in uncharted territory,” says Nel. “In countries whose health infrastructure has been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of severe Covid-19 cases, healthcare workers have been infected at an alarming rate, leading to a global demand and shortage of PPE.”

On June 11, 2020, Uvex South Africa handed over a donation of 40 000 safety spectacles to the National Department of Health at their headquarters in Pretoria. “Fighting at the frontline of the pandemic, the National Department of Health was the first of three recipients to receive part of this R 1,68 million donation,” Nel says.

The Department of Health will deploy this stock to the frontline emergency medical services, rescue personnel, port health and forensic pathology services in all nine provinces across South Africa.

“We at Uvex are proud to be part of this initiative and to be able to act on our mission of ‘Protecting People’,” says Nel.
