Zero-emission refrigerated quadracycle makes its debut

Environmentally focused eCargo bike is purpose designed to carry chilled or frozen foods

United Kingdom (UK)-based Electric Assisted Vehicles Limited (EAV) has launched what it claims to be a world first – a fully temperature-controlled eCargo bike. The EAVcool Cargo was launched last week at the Restaurant and Takeaway Show at London’s Excel Arena.

Primarily designed for the delivery of chilled or frozen foods within a continuous cold chain, the EAVcool is a purpose-built, zero-emission, environmentally focused quadracycle, which weighs 120 kg and carries a 120-kg payload.

Using an e-nertia boost button, a 250 Watt motor helps the rider accelerate up to an initial six kilometres per hour and then on to a maximum, pedal-assisted 25 km/h. The bike can cover a range of up to 90 km a day on a single battery charge. Batteries can also be swapped to keep it in constant use. Recharge time is less than six hours.

Developed in conjunction with Solomon Commercials – one of the UK’s leading, temperature-controlled vehicle bodybuilders – the bike’s insulated compartments provide two completely independent zones for frozen and chilled products. Temperature control is maintained through a highly efficient 12 volt cooling system.

“The EAVcool is an entirely new type of vehicle and is designed specifically to meet the challenges of making deliveries in the urban environment,” says a statement issued by the company. “The vehicle itself has the potential to be more efficient than traditional vans in certain locations. It is highly manoeuvrable and can often get closer to delivery addresses than most vans, or even motorcycles.”

Nigel Gordon-Stewart, chairman of EAV, says the bike offers clear evidence of the real potential of environmental friendliness and efficiency for deliveries within congested, city environments.
